Tribtown on the Wine's Blues & Brews Festival Wine, blues aid Red Cross
June 21, 2010 7:50 AM
LouAnn Thiel and Fran Jackson, friends for
28 years, decided to check out the Wine
Festival after searching for something to do
on Saturday.
“It seemed like a good outing for the day,” Jackson said. “This is a perfect opportunity to taste the local food and wine, and meet some nice people.” Residents of Norman, the two friends met in northern Indiana and rode horses together. Jackson retired to Jackson County. Thiel is on her way to retirement. “We’re looking forward to having the wine and hearing the blues,” Thiel said before partaking in the wine. “It sounded like a worthy cause.” The third annual festival, sponsored by the Jackson County Chapter of the American Red Cross, was held at the Brownstown residence of Pat Hobbs, a supporter and benefactor of the Red Cross. Searching for a fundraiser years ago, the board of directors from the county chapter, after talking to people in different communities that had successful festivals, decided to give it a whirl. “I had been to one up north, jettisoned it to the board, and they said, ‘Go with it,’” said Jane Nierman, who chairs the board of directors. “The idea seemed to evolve,” said Wilma Wessel, executive director of the Jackson County Chapter. “Once the committee started looking at it, we realized quickly that we had a lot to learn before we put one together,” Wessel added. Nierman said the fest has been profitable from year one. She says the success is attributable to community support and involvement. “It’s a beautiful setting,” Jan Blomenberg said. “It’s like a mini fair. There is a lot of Jackson County flavor.” For $20, participants tasted from four wineries and three breweries. Program Director Sally Banks said there were fewer samples than last year because of crowding. Banks said in 2009, there were 13 wineries, plus food vendors. “It was too much for our function last year,” Banks said. “Each winery wasn’t getting the attention that they deserved.” That changed this year, especially for Dave Smith — owner of Smith’s Winery, based out of Columbus. “This is our first time here, so we’re the new kids on the block,” Smith said. “It’s been a really good reception today.” Smith owns the first African-American winery in the Midwest. In lieu of a store, he has traveled to similar fests and farmers markets around the state for the past five years. “We started out small,” Smith said. “We’re still small. We like talking with people and we like having fun with people, so that’s where we stay.” The people had fun, too. Several first-timers, such as Rita Rhoades from Columbus, heard about the festival on the radio. “It’s awesome,” said Rhoades, who won tickets to the festival during a radio contest. “They put on a great fest.” Accompanied with fine food and drink were clear skies and a cool breeze, which didn’t go overlooked by Larry and Barbara Harden. “The scenery is beautiful,” Larry said. “It’s a perfect setup.” “It’s so well organized. It’s so well done,” Barbara added. “This is our first time here, but it won’t be our last.”
