Lifeguard Training and Requirements

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course will help you develop skills and experience that will be valued by colleges and future employers. It's a great way to demonstrate what you can offer. Colleges and employers look for applicants who can deal effectively with people, who have a take charge attitude and who are willing to work to develop new skills. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for Lifeguards.

The cost of the course is $150 and must be paid before the first class session.  The class requires a minimum of 31 hours for completion.  Attendance of all class sessions is required.  If you are going to miss a session then you will have to work that out with your Instructor.  Absence to any class sessions will result in a failure for the course.

Prerequisites:

  • Must be 15 by the last session of the course
  • Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously
  • Must be able to swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
